I remember the first time I walked in, I thought, oh my Jesus! THIS I what I’d do if I had my own store!
And so I slowly became a regular. I visited once a week. I spent oodles of money. I loved the clothes and the home goods, but most of all I loved the owner, Marie.
One day I told her I loved the store so much, I could live in it! Marie said, “Well, I do need someone to work here next weekend so I can go to my cabin, if you’re interested?” Ummmmm…. YES, PLEASE! I texted Gus after I left the store and said, I hope Marie is serious! Because working there would be like a dream come true!
And that’s how it happened Internets, as easy as that.
At first I just filled in from time to time, but then I started working every Thursday. I started helping Marie with organizing the store, repurposing things, I re-covered benches, weaved new seats for chairs, we made Christmas ornaments, we painted the store, I helped order clothes…. Before long there wasn’t a day I didn’t think about the store.
One day Marie’s husband came to the store, it was the first time I met him. He said to me, “It’s so nice to finally meet you! I thought you were a mythical creature, doing all this stuff around the store! Like a unicorn!”
Ever since that day I have been Marie’s unicorn! Now, when we do something awesome we say we “unicorned it” or when we are fixing something, we are “unicorn’ing it”!
I feel so lucky. I get to do things that I love to do, i get to express myself creatively, I get to get all dressed up once a week, and getting paid in clothes doesn’t suck either!
But, honestly? The last 6 months have been kind of rough. Having Marie and the store has saved me. Marie is one of the best friends I’ve ever had. And I am so lucky to have a friend like Gus, who seems to always know what’s best for me before I do! She saw where I belonged and she fit me in like a missing puzzle piece.
