Smart Mouth

He left tonight… on a school trip to Washington DC. He is going to meet our congressman, tour The White House, The Supreme Court , The Library of Congress, ALL of the War Memorials, and Arlington Cemetary, eat at the Hard Rock Cafe, etc, etc, blah, blah…..

As the bus pulled up tonight (they drive through the night) he slapped my arm and said, GAH! It’s here! I am leaving! And that is when I started crying. He looked at me and said, OOOOOOH! Did I hit you too hard? I said, Ummmmmm. No.

Then he realized I was being a baby because he was leaving, so he tried to cheer my up with some fun facts. (Also, I think he was probably partially mortified that I was about to burst into sobs in front of his friends.) Anyway, the funfacts were, Do you know that the world’s deadliest animal is the Mosquito? or Did you know that the state dance of South Carolina is the shag? or Did you know that the world’s most shoplifted book is the BIBLE! HA! and NOT even JUST in SC either, everywhere! or Did you know a catfish has over 27,000 taste buds? He would have kept going, but I begged him to stop.

Then as the bus pulled away, I hurried to my car, because I didn’t want to be bawling and cry coughing in front of all those strangers. Then I got stuck at a train and cried some more. I called someone and left a weepy voicemail. Then, after ten minutes, just as the train was done creeping by, another train came from the other direction. WTF? So, I sat there and cried for another ten minutes.

Then, finally, the trains passed and I headed home. That is when it occured to me, that if I cry THIS hard when he leaves for four days…. OMG. I am going to D-I-E when he goes to college.

Then? When I was just about home? He called me! On his new (acquired yesterday!) cell phone, and he said…… “I am gonna miss you too Mom.”

Awwwww. That made me smile.
